Welcome to Charney Bassett

The website of Charney Bassett Parish Council, with information on other village groups/organisations - including Charney Hall and Field Trust (CHAFT).

Charney Bassett is a small village on the River Ock. There has been a settlement here since at least Anglo-Saxon times when an early record shows a grant of lands to the Abbot of Abingdon Abbey (811 AD). The land was largely marsh, the meaning of 'Charney' being Cearn- isle or island beside the River Cearn. Today the village is largely residential with it's own pub (the Chequers), the C12th church of St Peter's and a residential retreat and conference centre at Charney Manor. The Parish Council looks after Charney Mill, the Village Green and several other pieces of open land and provides a small allotment site. The Village Hall and Playing Field is owned and managed by CHAFT.
